Who is the Skilled Nominated 190 visa for?
Skills. State nomination. Points. Permanent residence.
The Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government and invited to apply.
Applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect, recording information including their nominated occupation, skills assessment, English language ability, qualifications and skilled employment.
State and territory governments apply their own nomination criteria in addition to the Commonwealth visa requirements. Nomination for subclass 190 contributes 5 points towards the points test, but nomination processes, occupation priorities and eligibility requirements vary between jurisdictions.
01
Eligible occupation
The nominated occupation must be eligible for the subclass 190 pathway and meet the requirements relevant to the nominating state or territory.
Key requirements for a Skilled Nominated 190 visa
02
Skills assessment
A suitable skills assessment for the nominated occupation is required before submitting the EOI.
03
Points test
Applicants need at least 65 points, including the 5 points provided by subclass 190 nomination.
04
State or territory nomination
The applicant must meet the nomination criteria of the relevant state or territory as well as the Commonwealth visa requirements.
05
Invitation to apply
An EOI and state nomination do not themselves constitute a visa application. The applicant must receive an invitation before lodging the subclass 190 visa.
06
Age & other requirements
Age requirements apply, together with health, character and other visa criteria.
01
Assess eligibility
Check the occupation, skills assessment, points position and potential state nomination options.

Things to check before pursuing a subclass 190 visa
Nomination requirements
States may impose requirements relating to residence, employment, occupation, skills, English or other factors, and these can change during a program year.
Choosing the right state
State and territory nomination programs have different occupation priorities and eligibility requirements. Applying everywhere is not necessarily an effective strategy.
Points claimed
Every point claimed in the EOI needs to be supportable, including English, qualifications, employment and partner points.
EOI strategy
The EOI should reflect the intended nomination strategy. Where different visa subclasses or jurisdictions are being pursued, separate EOIs can sometimes provide a cleaner approach.
Not sure which state nomination pathway is realistic for you?
Subclass 190 eligibility involves both the Commonwealth visa requirements and the nomination criteria of the relevant state or territory. We can assess your occupation, points position and nomination options before an EOI strategy is prepared.
